Intertextual References Inside Of My Video

As a viewer I have found that a text that includes ideas from other texts can be very fun and exiting for the viewers who notice them. This is why I have decided to include several intertextual references inside my music video.

Rizzle Kicks- Skip To The Good Bit
Whilst watching this song, I realised I could intertextually reference one of their own songs through the use of Kia and Henry. As Kia is the ex of Henry in my video, I thought that I also would use a mid shot very similar to this. This is the exact representation I wanted to create for my video and therefore I thought it most appropriate to represent this moment similarly. I will also use a mid shot to show this racy moment as it is appropriate for a younger audience but implies something sexual.

Friends
As the lyrics indicate that he watches the TV show 'Friends', it would more than make sense to include this in my video. The camera focuses on the TV screen where Henry is watching 'Friends.' This is not only intertextual but also includes two forms of media - Television inside a music video. I purposely include the TV outline so that we can distinguish that he is watching TV, and the viewers are aware that we are purposely showing them a TV show, not just a clip. This is later repeated when Henry sees himself on the TV.  I chose to do this because it references a Rizzle Kicks theme seen in a few of their songs, such as 'Lost Generation' - where he watches himself on TV - and 'Down With The Trumpets' where the action is taking place inside the radio, with the outside of the radio showing.

The Sims
Inside of my video, I will intertextually reference the game 'The Sims.' The lyrics state 'I don't play no games, sitting here sipping on some pino gregio.' My admittedly strange mind came up with the interpretation of having a fat Sims character drinking for this bit. This is not only to reference the games line, but also since I am not including alcohol, I am almost creating a PG rated interpretation of this line. I also reference this later in the song where he says about himself being jobless, fat and dumb; I chose to show this through the Sims character. I make it clear that this is on the computer by including the laptop in the mid shot where we return to Henry's lip-sync.

Napoleon Dynamite- Opening Credits
Last year I had studied film openings for media, and this particular film opening has always remained in my memory. When trying to come up with ideas for each line, this seemed like an ingenious solution that I could use.  I will produce this in a very similar way with the writing of the lyrics on top of the sandwich, being shot by a birds eye view shot.

Break Down of Direction for Each Line

Direction of each line.
This is my direction of what happens for each line. The highlighted bits are for me to be able to distinguish what I need my actors for and what I can do by myself. I did this after a trip to the British film institute, where I realised I had to re-think the action for each line. This now means that my video will be more interesting and have a faster cutting rate. After having done this, I am more confident of my ideas.

Following Katy Perry

Katy Perry- first album. (2005)

Katy begins looking rather young with quite childish attitudes, indie costume and make up, subtle rebellion. quite silly, and edgy. The use of the Asian cities in the background suggest gentleness.
She doesn't have the image she has grown into. Not very sexually provocative, scruffy hair, still quite laid back lyrics. In this song she tends to use mostly mid shots including lots of Mise-en scene . The mise-en scene however is mostly highlighted through long shots. Unlike any of her other videos, this video has effects such as text that appears on screen, differentiating this video from her others.

One Of The Boys (2007-2009)
Quite sexualised lyrics reflect womanly sexualism. male gaze. Songs like 'kissed a girl' show her as being sexually experimental. Lots of short, revealing clothing. Crazy colours, very bright, very quick changing of ideas. style is very different almost every video. very jokey, un-serious attitudes. for example, in Hot N Cold, she gets jilted but instead of it being depressing, it is still a very upbeat song and the way she goes mad almost trying to hunt him down is rather humorous.
Throughout this album, she is fully thriving, energetic, crazy and sexually provocative.

She then changes her style to something that almost contrasts all of the rest of her videos on this album. This video alike the song is very gentle and slow. Clothes are still quite raunchy, however, she still takes the appropriate fashion of the time and modernizes it. Brings in themes of war, and shows a gentle side to Katy.

However, she returned to her crazy extravagant style, as we can very easily see, she is wearing very bright colours and crazy styles. Everything in this video is rather crazy and extravagant to match with the lyrics of the song.

Teenage Dream (2010-2012)
In her album teenage dream, almost every video she makes has a different style. I would call this her experimental stage, where rather then focusing on a set style, she goes for as many things as possible that are altogether very bizzare. She goes from having bright pink and bright blue hair, to dressing up as an alien, to having fireworks flying out of her chest and  being a geeky teenage girl with a face full of braces. This album is full of many very successful videos and altogether is probably the most diverse album she has made, but as an album, the craziness of her ideas does fit the title as all the videos do conform to the 'teenage dream.'

For example, firework, alike her earlier work is very natural but still maintains the bizzareness that usually is associated with Katy Perry, such as all of the magic tricks and the fireworks shooting out of all different body areas. however Katy has not strayed too far from what we know of her, she still is covered in glitter and other things that sparkle.

Last Friday night is fabulous because it is so very postmodern. the video includes clothing set in the 1980's however includes modern features such as a nintendo wii. It also is intertextual as it is based on films such as 'the breakfast club. the video also includes many other famous people acting as party guests, such as Rebecca Black  Corey Feldman, Debbie Gibson, Kenny G, Hanson, and Kevin McHale and Darren Criss.

Prism (current)
She has only released one song from this album to date, however, from what I can gather from roar, this is more of a natural look that Katy is embracing. This video has a lovely colour scheme but is not as crazily coloured as the luminous colours usually associated with Katy's videos. although this has  a beautiful colour scheme, it embraces the natural elements, she even has very natural looking make up on.

Rizzle kicks- skip to the good bit

Rizzle Kicks- Skip To The Good Bit
Just before I started filming, I watched the newest Rizzle Kicks video and my first thought was how different this video is to any of their previous videos. Corin Hardy's interpretations of this Rizzle Kicks video is so diverse due to it having such a heavily sexual influence. I thought that it would be interesting to include some of the aspects of this video in my own video. I absolutely love the visual clarity that is shown in this video. The very bright and chirpy colour scheme used in this video is visually enchanting and I would love to create a similar colour scheme for my video. However, I do not think that if I create such a heavily sexualised video like this one, that it would be recieved as well as theirs has, so that may have to be the point of restriction for this video.

My Production Logo

MY PRODUCTION LOGO
I wanted to create a logo so that it would be clear that I had created this video. Using adobe photoshop I was able to create the logo. I decided to call my company 'B.A.D Recordings' because these are my initials (Briony Anne Dillon). From this stemmed the idea of rebellion in my logo, which fits very well with the rebelion from my video where our main character is shown as having an anti-conformist attitude. I also did research on typically rap logos and found the design appropriate. By using these three colours, red black and white, it shows a very dangerous, yet bold image that alike my video, I wanted to be very in your face and eye-catching.

Features of Rizzle kicks Videos

Features of Rizzle Kicks videos:

  • Very jokey/laid back attitude displayed- I will use this theme by having my main character act in a very laid back way that contrasts to the other characters in the video to exaggerate this point.
  • Performance based - I will include this by having lots of lipsynching, a common theme of theirs.
  • Takes place in very local backgrounds for them - Sadly as I do not live in Brighton, I cannot use locations that are local to them, but the locations I will use will be very urban, common backgrounds rather then very site specific areas.
  • Bright cheery lighting- As my video is not going to be a serious video, to use dark lighting would appear rather odd, so I definitely will be using bright lighting for this video.
  • Based on main character(s)- My video is going to be very heavily focused on my main character to exaggerate the meaning of these lyrics.

Toby Lockerbie

Toby Lockerbie
The master of almost every video that Rizzle kicks feature on is called Toby Lockerbie. As he is the source maker of my inspiration for my video, I thought I would gain a lot by doing some reasearch on his work and inspirations for his versions of the videos.

These are all of the videos that Rizzle kicks had been a part of before their album 'The Roaring Twenties'
when 'couch potato' had been produced. I however know that he worked on the videos that are very current as well.

Looking at his website http://www.tobyloc.com/    I saw the comments he had made on several videos and thought how I could interpret this in my music video. He had explained his reasoning for the upwards shots in 'travellers chant' which I had really liked whilst watching this video.I agree with the idea he has that 'it gives a true sense of wandering around' which I really admire and think I could use this to show how our main character is very unfocused reflecting his mind state.

StoryBoards

This is a rough guide of what I am going to do for my film. As I plan to use several experimental shots, I am going to use this as a rough guideline of what I am going to do. As some of the shots as you can see are slightly too long, I may expand these into several shots if they aren't interesting enough in practice. However, these provide the rough guide through my music video.
Additionally, to explain, these drawings aren't very detailed because as you may be able to tell, my drawing is not my strong point, but hopefully the idea of the shot is still conveyed.

Animatic

This is my animatic. when I put my shots together with the music, I found that some of the shots seemed rather longer than I had initially thought. When pursuing with the filming, if I find that these shots are too long and not in fitting with the music or entertaining enough, I will make adaptations to this animatic.
However I was glad to have done this as it helped me to understand how sharp the cutting rate should be, and I was shown that I do need to be cautious when filming to additionally take extra shots, just in case.
Due to technical difficulties, I have been unable to include the sound as well. however, when preparing the animatic, where I had the sound as well, I made sure the pictures matched the timing.

Location reports

Location Reports

My house
As the song is about a 'couch potato,' most of the song will need to take place inside the living room where my sofa is, so he can prove he is a 'couch potato'. I decided to use my house because it is fairly spacious and can be easily maneuvered if needed. Additionally, I will have more space to get shots at different angles and of course it is the most reliable set I can use for filming.

My neighbors home gym
One of my initial reasons for choosing this song was because I knew that I would be able to stage this inside my neighbors 'home gym.' As it is in a fairly spacious room of his house, I do not have to worry about the problems that arise in official gyms such as not being allowed to film or having time restrictions etc. also i based my set around the equipment inside his gym, so it is a very important set.

Alleyway
To create the probably most cheeky part of my video, I have to use an alleyway near our other two sets so that our female character can drag him down one of the parting ways next to the alley.

Roads
Several roads will need to be used in order to complete this video. This is because on his trip to see his ex, somehow he needs to get home. I decided to use wide quiet roads so that filming would become a great deal easier without having to dodge cars, and it is easier to roll the equipment on the panning shot.

Casting notes

Casting Notes

Main character (Jordan)
For the main character, I wanted to choose somone who could firstly take the job seriously, and then can also be very cheeky and successfully portray a 'couch potato.' This is why I had decided to cast Richard. He visually fits the profile I had envisioned for this character. additionally, in reference to the work I am doing I know he will portray the image that will look the way that looks correct.
As Richard is a very funny person I am confident that he will be able to convey the funny attitude behind my ideas and show the laid back character very successfully.

Mother
For the mother character, I wanted to create as much hilarity as possible. Wendy is one of the funniest people I know and I know can portray this though her body language. I will dress her up in a dressing gown, hair rollers and slippers so she looks like your typical nagging mother. Also given the fact that she is very different to Henry, I think that they will crete an excellent contrast and a very funny scene when they are together. Wendy is more than qualified for this job as she has previously been in my video last year for our thriller film opening, aswell as having done GCSE drama.

Ex-girlfriend
For the ex-girlfriend, I wanted to pick a girl who could fulfil the male gaze section of the film. It was important for me to use a woman who could dress slightly provocatively but also could get away with being rude as the lyrics suggest. I decided to pick Kia because I am sure that she will be able to successfully portray all aspects of this role.

Music Video Survey Analysis

After having 20 people complete my survey, all from different backgrounds, I decided to gather the information to find the correlation of the results. I found this very beneficial because it gave me many points of inspiration for my music video.

British Hip Hop

Rizzle kicks' music is part of the british hip-hop/ rap Genre

British hip hop is a form of urban music from the unineted kingdom, originally influenced by the dub/toasting introduced by Jamaican immigrants in the 1960s–70s, who eventually developed uniquely influenced rapping in order to match the rhythm of the ever-increasing pace and aggression of Jamaican-influenced dub in the UK and to describe street/gang violence, similar to that in the US. UK rap, or speed-toasting, has also been heavily influenced by US hip-hop
Typical istruments used include turntables, synthesizers, rapping, drum machines, samplers and guitars.
The first UK record label devoted to releasing UK hip hop acts was founded in 1986. Simon Harris' Music of Life label was home to rapper Derek B - the first UK rapper to achieve chart success
Grime however has an originination of 'london' rather than the unineted kingdom, making it a slightly different genre, although they are very similar.
Places such as 1xtra and channel AKA are where it is most likely you will find the broadcasting of British Hip Hop

Inspiration for a camera shot

(between 2:03-2:15)
Whist watching ‘Scouting For Girls- She’s so lovely’, I noticed the very close tracking shot that was used while he was lip synching ‘I think that you are lovely.’ I thought this make him look rather dopey, which I hope to achieve for my main character. If we did this while he was eating chips, and he was lip synching, it would be a bit disgusting, showing how un-kept he is as a character showing a correct representation. Of course, if this is too discomforting for either the actor or the audience, I would make more of a zoom out to get more in the frame, so the chewed up food is less of a focus.

Music Video Survey

Letter to the record company

22 St Peter
London
England
W6 9NW

Dear island records,

My name is Briony Anne Dillon and I am currently studying at St.Annes Catholic high school. I am writing this letter in the hope that you will allow me to use Rizzle Kicks song ‘couch potato’ for my Media A-level coursework, in which we make a music video from an already existing song. The hilariously witty lyrics would be perfect for me to work with. Not to mention that it would be a privilege to make a music video from one of my favourite songs from my favourite band.

If you would allow me to work with this song I would appreciate it very much and it would mean a great deal to me. However, I hope you do not feel pressured and I would understand if this is not possible.

I would finally like to wish you the best of luck for the future and show my appreciation for your work.

Yours sincerely,

Briony Anne Dillon

Mood Board

This is the mood board I created for the song Couch potato. I included pictures of things that reguarly appear in the video, such as mayonaise, the nagging mother and friends. I also wrote song lyrics over the images to  enforce the purpose of the images.

Music video Treatment

Music Video Treatment
My video will be mainly performance based but still some aspects of narrative will be focusing around our main character, who will be representing Jordan from Rizzle kicks. As matching with the lyrics, I will be focusing on the laziness of a man who is a ‘couch potato.’ I will start with a hilariously dressed mother nagging our main character, followed by the very typically Rizzle Kicks video idea of performing to the camera, where we will need to use lip synching. Lipsynching will be needed almost throughout the video, woven into our short skits of narrative. I then have a moment where he says ‘I don’t no play games yo’ and will show him playing on his x-box for humorous irony. He then says ‘make me a sandwich with a little bit of mayo,’  so we show him eating a sandwich really messily and then through the next line or two, he will be mouthing the words with food in his mouth, whilst still playing his x-box. Next bit I stage in my neighbours gym, I have a close up of the exchange of £30 as say in the lyrics, then when inside the gym, he walks by the clock, it says 12:30 then fast forewards through to one, then camera shows him sleeping, then he wakes up checks his watch and walks out. Next, as it says ‘all I do is watch friends, probrably the reason why ive not got friends’ shows him laughing at friends with no one next to him. Later he says ‘yo getting texts of my ex wanting sex’ so it shows him pull out his phone, and I will speed up the pace of him walking to the girls house, girl opens door, door closes. Then on his ‘way home’ he stops in to the chip shop because it should arrive on the line ‘what? And if I do go out well I’m getting cheesy chips on the way home.’I then return to his house, where he is sitting on the sofa with a big pack of crisps stuffed under his top, and at ‘jobless fat and dumb,’ he pulls out a packet of crisps from under his top so he looked like he was imitating being fat. Mum then comes onscreen to spray deodorant for the line ‘yard reeks having let my bath leak since last week’ my main character seems careless. I then have for the rest of the song him mouthing the responses so lip synching whilst displaying how much of a ‘couch potato’ he is; eating, on his phone, very messy, puts dirty socks on table. Then to end ‘check me out’ will be a mid-shot of him looking rather proud of himself.

Reserch into Chosen artist: Rizzle Kicks

Rizzle kicks
I am planning to use a Rizzle Kicks song for our project. One of the reasons I decided to use Rizzle Kicks is because they are my favorite duo in the music industry, they have a similar structure through their videos, which I admire and they produce many fabulous songs. They also have a very good narrative edge to their songs which you find in almost every song they write. They also have a very happy vibe to their lyrics which makes them able to put across meaningful words without depressing the listeners.
The band consists of Jordan Stephens (Rizzle) and Harley Sylvester Alexander-Sule (Kicks) that both studied at Brit School, Harley studying theatre and Jordan studying music. Originally, Harley was only meant to feature on a song by Jordan, but they realized that their voices jelled well together, and this resulted in them making a career together.
So far, they have made two successful albums. Their debut album 'Stereotypical' and 'The Roaring 20's'. These feature such brilliant songs as 'Down With The Trumpets', 'Mumma Do The Hump', 'That's Classic', 'Learn My Lesson' and many others. However, the song we have chosen to use 'couch potato' is not off either of their albums, but off an EP called 'Left Over Presents'.
They are signed by Island Records which is part of Universal Records.
As well as touring based on their singles, they also do many charity events and even to begin his career, Jordan did rapping at many charity events.

These are some examples of their videos:

Dreamers

Lyrically this song is a typical Rap song, as it includes the typical self promotion usually included in Rap, also included the arm gestures in the video. However, it also has a very different edge that most rap videos usally dont. Like many Rizzle kicks videos, it includes them mucking around as well as some beautiful artwork and dancing. This is a cleverly constructed video, as it matches the lyrics but does not give off the typicallised overconfidence vibe that could easily be matched with the lyrics, given to another artist.
A great deal of this video is performance based to exaggerate the idea of them being 'dreamers.' This is then furthered by the use of very colourful and imaginative clothing and mise-en-scene. By using natural lighting, it is like a symbol for their naturalistic imagination not cluttered by materialism or other ideas, just a very beautiful naturalistic location reflecting their artistic dreams. This video is very individualistic, mainly due to the ideas put forward by Toby Lockerbie but heavily like the other Rizzle Kicks videos.

When I was a youngster

This is one of my favorite Rizzle Kicks videos because of the fun that is displayed. The flashes forward and backwards in time between their childhood and adulthood are very humorous and show them as laid back people which I find very likable in their personalities.
This video is very performance based as it shows them mainly lipsynching, but also has aspects of narrative embedded into the performance. As this song is very upbeat, this is reflected in the clothing, lighting, and locations as these all create a very happy atmosphere. The clothing also helps to exaggerate the childishness of this video by using the fireman's and cowboys outfits; These also communicate who is young Jordan and young Harley. I think that this video has a broad target audience among younger viewers, as most people from teenage years would be able to in someway relate to the ideas of this video.

Prophet

This is one of my favourite Rizzle kicks videos because of the very individualistic effects used throughout. It really clearly displays the mindset of these two characters being shown in the video. Another reason I love this is because it follows a very similar structure throughout the whole video, rather then just dipping into these ideas in places as is usually done with difficult effects like this.
This video is mostly performance with aspects of narrative flowing through it. There is a very clear contrast between the devil character (Jordan) and the angel character (Harley)by use of location, lighting effects and mise-en-scene. We tend to see darker colours used in scenes that involve Jordan to connote the dark side of his personality. This contrasts with the light gentle colours such as blue to connote the angelic character that Harley represents. I think that this is mainly aimed at a younger audience due to the wildness that is presented. This is usually a theme that appears when videos are directed at a younger audience.

Anaysis of Several Music Videos

Thriller - Micheal Jackson
This video is about half narrative half performance. This is cleverly contructed so that the performance is part of the narrative.
The victims in this music video tend to wear blues and pinks, mostly innocent calm colours to exaggerate this contrasting to the bright red that micheal wears to connote a sense of danger.
I like how this video is very dark eerie and suspenseful.
Micheal Jackson presents himself as being dangerous in the video.
I think this video is trying to attract young adults of any gender due to the set-up at the begging where the expected video turns into an intertextual movie in the music video.
This video in particular helped to launch Micheal as a solo artist and evoked a change in the way music videos are made and presented, which has resulted in it being so legendary.

The A team-Ed Sheeran
This video is 100% narrative in order to portray its message of how drugs negatively effect the lives of people and in this case, this young girl whose taking class a drugs, relating to the title as shes part of the 'a-team.' I would assume that this video is aimed at a teenage audience to warn them against the effects of class A drugs.
This video is cleverly set in very glooms depressing settings such as the girls grimy apartment, out on the streets and the alarming car park where she awaits her 'client' as she has been forced to prostitute herself. The dark filters and black and white clothing help to reflect the lack of hope and hapiness in her life. She also tends to wear very rugged or revealing clothing so that it is easy to understand exactly what is going on with her and that the audience can tell what a terrible state she is in.
For Ed Sheeran this was a perfect song to really kick off his career. It presented him as a very caring person which I believe is reflected through most of his videos. I also think that this presents him as being a rolemodel by trying to stop the audience from doing things which other singers/bands enforce.

Omarion- Ice Box
This video is about 50% narrative 50% performance. This video is very dark, to connotate the dark depressive state that he is in. I would assume this video is aimed at a younger audience because it appears very commercialised. The clothing is black and white possibly showing the good and bad for both how he feels and the way he is treating his lover, showing he intends well, but hes been far too hurt. There is also lot of  uses of forests and mansion like houses, exaggerating the darkness of his situation.
I liked the use of the cartoonlike heart that goes blue to signalise the coldness of his 'ice-box' heart. This was a very strong vsual and very nice use of metaphorical imagery.
This video was very important for Omarions career as the song became a worldwide hit. It was a chance for him to display that he had other talents then pure singing alone.

Music Video Preliminary Task

This is our preliminary task. we had a great deal of fun working with this song and making ourselves look a bit silly.
I liked the way that the beginning slotted together where we switched from me and rahab being at the front.
We found some complications with lip-syncing, which we now understand is more complicated then we had previously expected and is an area which needs working on.
If I were to re-do this video, i would work on the acting skills because as im sure you can tell, we had a case of the giggles.
I do however warn any viewers with lactose intollerance, our video is rather cheesy.
